Design thinking in healthcare: start with the patient

Healthcare innovation often starts with technology. The best solutions start with the people who live with the problem every day.

Working with patients and clinical staff has taught me that the real problem is rarely the one first described. A request for a new app is often a need for better communication, clearer information or less waiting.

Design thinking helps by forcing us to understand before we solve. Interviews, observations and journey maps reveal the small frictions that add up to a poor experience.

Equally important is involving clinicians early. A solution that ignores their workflow will not be used, no matter how good it looks.

Healthcare needs innovation, but it needs the right kind: grounded in real needs, tested with real people and implemented with care.
